Welcome to our exciting new blog, Power Source for Women.
We (Susan Sommers and Theresa Dugwell) are co-founders of a new venture, specifically designed for women and fitness.
Power Source for Women will offer a variety of resources for women, beginning with:
- a new book being launched in September 2010, Power Source for Women: Proven Fitness Strategies, Tools, and Success Stories for Women 45+
- a website, powersourceforwomen.com
- and this blog.
Future plans include:
- weekend fitness retreats
- keynote presentations
- FIT Breaks for conferences
- lifestyle coaching
- and a fitness vacation to Florence and Sienna in the fall of 2011.
We met in the summer of 2007 at a YMCA in Toronto where we were both members. We talked about all of the wonderful, inspiring women — from 22 to 90 years of age — we saw working out at six in the morning and how they could motivate other women to commit to fitness. They included women in excellent health and those who are dealing with a variety of problems and issues, such as poor eyesight, multiple sclerosis, cancer, and arthritis. We realized these women had stories to tell.
In the fall of 2007 the YMCA Women’s Workshop Series “Celebrating Our Y Women” was created to give these and other women an opportunity to develop their stories into a presentation, assisted by Theresa. The purpose of the workshops was to educate, inspire, motivate, and build community from their stories. The wonderful outcome of this experience was that the women found a power source from within and were eager to do more.
Susan was the first speaker, in October 2007, shortly after completing her second marathon, at the age of 63. Subsequently, eight other women were invited to tell their stories and to share their successes and challenges. In fact, some of the women featured in our new book as Power Source Role Models — Gloria Jacobs, Claire Vendramini, and Abbey Smith — appeared as speakers in this workshop series.
The series was an overwhelming success. As other women heard about the events, they contacted us for advice and inspiration. As a result, we decided in the fall of 2009 to write a book of fitness strategies, tools, and success stories – designed for women over 45.
Our goal is to make our Power Source for Women blog an online fitness community for women to:
- connect with other women
- share their stories
- and discuss their struggles and successes on their journey to lifelong fitness.
Four women will be contributing to our blogs: Susan and Theresa (authors), Ruth Krongold (our Emotional Fitness Expert), and Lesley Shore (our Journaling Expert).
